27 bites at Lake Como

I'm just here for Aperol Spritz

Not only does George Clooney reside in this picturesque place, but we also consider ourselves fortunate to call Lake Como our home for at least a week.

Upon arrival, we were immediately captivated by the unique charm of this place. Who needs the sea in Italy when you can have the enchanting view of Lake Como?

The clear, glittering water, framed by gently rising mountains and picturesque villages, offers a breathtaking backdrop that instantly captivates us.

Lake Como is not only a special destination because of its beauty but also because of its excellent sustainable transportation options. The journey by train is straightforward, and within the towns, boats offer a romantic and relaxed way to get around. Our preferred choice, however, is the rented Vespa, which allows us to explore the surroundings flexibly and eco-friendly.

Our discovery tours lead us through enchanting places like Bellagio, Varenna, and Lecco, where we savor delicious Italian specialties. The culinary diversity of Lake Como leaves nothing to be desired – there is something to discover for every palate.

Classics of the Local Cuisine:

The cuisine at Lake Como is characterized by a variety of regional specialties and fresh ingredients, often sourced directly from the surrounding area. Of course, typical classics like Tiramisu or Risotto are not missing from the menus. The cuisine at Lake Como offers a wonderful mix of traditional Lombard and Italian dishes that delight every palate.

Here is a small selection of local delicacies:

Snacks: Bresaola (air-dried beef), Sciatt (fried dough balls filled with melted cheese), Antipasti (mixed plates with cheese, sausage, and pickled vegetables), ... Main dish: Risotto con Pesce Persico (risotto with perch fillets), Pizzoccheri (buckwheat noodles with potatoes, savoy cabbage & cheese), Polenta e Missoltini (polenta served with freshwater fish), Lavarello alla Griglia (grilled whitefish), ... Sweets: Torta Miascia (cake made from cornmeal, apples, pears, raisins, and pine nuts), Gelato (Italian ice cream) and classics like Tiramisu, Panna Cotta, or Cannoli Drinks: Wine, Aperol Spritz, Grappa, Caffè, Limoncello (lemon liqueur, often served as a digestif)

The hype around the Aperol Spritz is not dying down – and honestly, who could resist this drink? This brightly orange-colored drink, which looks like a liquid sunset in a glass, has spread from the piazzas of Italy to rooftop terraces and beach bars around the world.

Aperitivo Culture

But what makes this drink so special? An Aperol Spritz consists of only three ingredients: Aperol, Prosecco, and soda. Simple, right? That's the point. Its simplicity makes it so accessible and easy to prepare. Anyone can become an Aperol Spritz master.

A few ice cubes, a splash of soda, and an orange slice for garnish – voilà, the perfect summer drink is served. It is refreshing, slightly bitter, fizzy, and just the right mix of sweet and tart.

An Aperol Spritz is like a mini vacation in a glass. Even better, when served with a platter of fresh cold cuts and cheese, as shown in the picture here. This makes the Aperol Spritz experience perfect and embodies the Italian Aperitivo culture at its finest.

I believe this hype will not end anytime soon. The Aperol Spritz has all the ingredients to remain a long-lasting favorite: simplicity, beauty, taste, and that certain something that keeps drawing us in. Just like Lake Como itself – a perfect combination of nature and pleasure that makes every moment special.
